Uheldig hellig krigføring?
Abstract
This thesis looks at the second crusade (1145-1149). Its purpose is to utilize new research regarding communication, warfare and logistics with strict contemporary sources that participants wrote during the second crusade. This challenges the more traditional historiographical representations based on later chronicles that dominate the representation of Manuel I Komnenos policy towards the second crusade.
The reason for this is located in the occasionally divided representations in the literature, from contemporary sources to newer research. The selected source martial extends itself over hundreds of years and gives a good overview of events that unfolded during the crusade and the consequences of this. Here we add new information that can be a part of what the author thinks is not a nuanced enough picture of how the crusades march actually was and what factors played a role until the crusader's demise.
At times, we think that Manuel I Komnenos has become a scapegoat by several contemporary historians and that this has been a part that forms the later historical narrative. This thesis leans heavily on letters written by two of the three most essential parties during the second crusade. This is Conrad III of Germany and Louis VII of France. Throughout this thesis will these very different stories from these actors be presented. This and later research will be crucial to explain our issue.
The argumentation will primarily be divided into three parts: Relationship and cooperation, clashes and sabotage and logistics. Each part will present a different point of view where we sometimes see weaknesses in former research. In the conclusion of this thesis, the historiographical representations of Manuel including his handling and politics during the second crusade are sometimes influenced by the slight nuance of the source material.
