Britisk politikk ved Washingtonkonferansen 1921 - 1922

Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg den britiske politikken ved flåtenedrustningskonferansen i Washington D.C. i årsskiftet 1921-22. Oppgaven ser på hvilke mål britene hadde, hva som skjedde på konferansen og i hvilken grad britene lykkes ved konferansen. Konklusjonene i hovedtrekk er at britene oppnådde mange av sine mål; at de fikk på plass avtaler som passet dem godt; at Storbritannia spilte en viktig rolle i å forme utfallet av konferansen.; men at det og blir en konferanse som stadfester at Royal Navy ikke lenger kan regne med å være enerådende til havs; og at det var uenigheter om den klokeste politikken innad i den britiske beslutningssirkelen.

This thesis concerns British policy at the Washington Disarmament Conference of 1921 – 1922. The thesis will look at the British goals for the conference, how the conference proceeded and to what degree the British succeeded in achieving those goals. The main conclusions is that the British played an important role in shaping the outcome of the conference; that the British achieved many of their goals for the conference; that the agreements the conference produced suited the British well; but that the conference also confirmed that the Royal Navy no longer was the pre-eminent navy in the world; and that there were disagreement on the wisest course of action between the British policymakers.
