Abstract
This bachelor's thesis examines various aspects of modern masculinity and how they are portrayed in the film Punch-Drunk Love. Focusing on the idea that masculinity consists of two conflicting sides that interact with each other, I explore performative masculinity theory and theories that examine the male body in film. I examine how the film's protagonist, Barry Egan, can be seen as a symbol of Donna Peberdy's ideas about male anxiety and bipolar masculinity and Thomas Lehman’s ideas about the representation of the male body in film, and how this relates to the masculinity debates of the early 2000’s.
