This thesis will examine the work of Andrei Tarkovsky and how the long take is utilized in his films. My hypothesis is that Tarkovsky uses the long take to engage the spectator and make them a participant in the interpretation of the films. I will illustrate this by using two major films in his catalog, Mirror (Tarkovsky, 1975) and Solaris (Tarkovsky, 1972). This paper will have three major parts: an introduction to the long take, a study on Tarkovsky himself and then a close study of three scenes from each film looking at the different elements in the long take to support my hypothesis that they are used to engage the spectator. Through these three parts I will try to prove the hypothesis. I will show that Tarkovsky uses the long take to engage the spectator to participate in the viewing and understanding of his film rather than being an idle spectator.
