Abstract
Police employees at the call center are known to be part of a demanding and stressfulprofession, with a number of challenges linked to their job demands. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate which psychosocial work environment factors that affects thehealth of police employees, focusing on job engagement and burnout, and how their jobdemands can be reduced. This study is a part of a larger research project incollaboration with the Eastern Police District, Norwegian Institute of Science andTechnology (NTNU), the Norwegian Police University College (PHS) andRikshospitalet/Oslo University Hospital/University of Oslo (UiO), which examines therelationship between the working conditions at the call center for employee’s sicknessabsence, turnover and health. A total of 77 employees at the call center in the EasternPolice District participated in an online survey. The results from hierarchical multipleregression analysis showed that mastery at work was the strongest predictor of jobengagement, and that need for recovery (NFR) was the strongest predictor of burnout.Furthermore, an inductive content analysis showed that changes in how the work at thecall center is organized, can contribute to reducing employees´ demands, with lessoptimal use of resources, low staffing, and less fair distribution of work identified asmost demanding. This study contributes with increased knowledge and understandingof how to promote occupational health and reduce employees´ demands and the callcenter, and further research should pay greater attention to factors that affectemployees occupational health in this profession.
