The world’s population is under a growing pressure to slow down climate change before the consequences are catastrophic. People of all ages all over the world fear doomsday, and we are for this very reason more dependent than ever on art and music to ease the stress. We often use music as an escape from reality and to put words on our concerns and thoughts. Because of this, it is natural that themes of climate crisis appear in music today. In this text, I will show how apocalypse is used as a tool in songwriting to describe climate crisis, and I will do so by analyzing three different songs: “Garden” by Pearl Jam, “all the good girls go to hell” by Billie Eilish, and “Dust” by The Neighbourhood. I chose these songs because they all are part of popular culture but are at the same time different and reach out to different groups of people. They also approach apocalypse in different ways. “Garden” by Pearl Jam is the oldest example, and I will therefore also see if there has been any change in songwriting and the music regarding this theme.
