Abstract

"Befolknings- og næringslivsutvikling i Lillesand: En komparativ studie av årene 1865 og 1910" benytter seg av en rekke forskjellige kilder, som folketellingene, norsk handels- og skipsfartsstatistikk og skatteligninger for å gi et innblikk i befolknings- og næringslivsutviklingen i sørlandsbyen Lillesand. Oppgaven ser spesielt på sjøfart og handel. Et sentralt element er hvordan Lillesand ser nærmest identisk ut utenfra etter 45 år - befolkningstallet, yrkesgruppene og næringene med størst økonomisk viktighet er nesten like. Mange av endringene som har skjedd kan ses i samfunnets oppbygning, for eksempel hvordan den døende skipsbyggingen hadde en stor effekt på det mannlige næringslivet, og hvordan kvinner trer inn i arbeidslivet. Det som en gang var en raskt voksende sjøfartsby med en havn full av skip og aktive verft ble et stillestående samfunn uten vilje eller evne til å tenke nytt.

"The development of population and business life in Lillesand: A comparative study of the years 1865 and 1910" uses a number of different sources, like census data for 1865 and 1910, as well as Norwegian trade and shipping stasticics, and local tax equations. The thesis especially looks at sailing and trade. A central element is how Lillesand almost looks identical from the outside after 45 years - the population number, occupational groups and businesses with the greatest economic importance are almost similar. Many of the changes can be seen in how the society is built, for example how the local shipbuilding dying had a great effect on the male business life, and how women step in into it. What was one a fast growing sailing based town with a port filled with ships and active shipyards became a frozen society without the ability or desire to think of something new.
