Abstract
Potassium 5-Hydroxypenta-2,4-dienal salt was prepared based on the literature procedures. This serves as the first starting material in the five-carbon homologation process and amidation reactions to afford dienal and amide products, respectively. Based on the publication, bromo penta dienal was initially supposed to be synthesized from potassium glutacon aldehyde, and then an amide coupling reaction was planned to be performed. But no bromo penta dienal was obtained. Therefore, an alternative procedure was considered to gain the final product. This method contains a synthesis of dienal compound using Grignard reagent in THF solvent, which was followed by oxidation and finally amide coupling. Since oxidation did not result in the appropriate product, the direct oxidative amidation in the presence of NHC catalysis was substituted to afford the corresponding amide compounds.
