1 Abstract
ObjectiveThis retrospective study was performed to assess the quality of care at the department ofthoracic surgery at St Olavs Hospital. Furthermore, it seeks to compare the patient group withother studies and evaluate whether postoperative CT-scan follow-up has been fulfilled.
MethodOver the period from 2008 to the end of 2019 141 patients underwent surgery for acute typeA aortic dissection. Data regarding patient demographics, history, surgery and complicationswere collected from patient records. Chi Square test and Student’s T test were used to analyzerelevant data.
ResultsAmong the 141 patients, 66.7% received ATAAD as initial diagnosis. The 30-day mortalitywas 22.7%. 30.9% of patients experienced some form of neurological complicationpostoperatively. Of the patients with neurological complications 10.6% were dischargedwithout recovery. 75% of patients received CT follow-up in accordance with local guidelines.
ConclusionThe quality of care provided by the department of thoracic surgery at St. Olavs Hospital isequivalent to comparable health institutions. The patients admitted to St. Olavs Hospitaldeveloped ATAAD roughly on par with patients from comparable countries. ATAADremains a disease with high mortality and grave prognosis despite surgical intervention.
