This thesis aims to gain insight into the experiences EPS (The Norwegian Educational Psychological Service) advisors working in Northern Norway have with interdisciplinary collaboration in resource teams with schools. The purpose of this study is to gain a closer understanding of what a resource team is and what it can be used for, moreover what influences collaboration in resource teams with schools and EPS. The thesis question states as follows: How do three EPS advisors working in small towns in Northern Norway experience the interdisciplinary collaboration in resource teams between schools and EPS?
A qualitative research method has been used to obtain the informants’ subjective experiences of the research phenomenon. I have conducted semi-structured interviews with three EPS advisors who are working in small districts in the Troms and Finnmark county. The thesis has a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to ensure that the informants’ own experiences are highlighted. The interviews constitute the thesis’ data material, which makes up the basis of the analysis. The analysis contains the following topics: interdisciplinarity, preparation, structure and roles, expectations and responsibilities. These topics provide an insight into what is perceived as important for the informants when it comes to collaborating in resource teams.
One of the thesis’ main findings is that collaboration and resource teams can be linked very closely together, as the informants understood collaboration as a prerequisite for resource teams. The study shows that they create a collaborative arena for EPS and schools, which could be understood as both individual and system-oriented work for EPS. EPS is given the opportunity to be actively involved with pupils who there are concerns about, and in referral cases, which can contribute to prevention and early intervention, which in turn can lead to fewer referrals. Resource teams can be used to fulfill the EPS’ service quality criteria and thereby ensure that EPS contributes to early efforts by working closer with schools. An important finding is that interdisciplinarity in resource teams ensures different perspectives, which are important for safeguarding the entirety and the child’s best interest when it comes to matters concerning pupils. The main finding in this thesis is that the topics in the analysis are in line with the literature’s understanding of success criterions for interdisciplinary collaboration. These findings show what the informants believe to be important for resource teams to function. This is the interdisciplinarity in the team, a plan for the team that all the participants would have access to and knowledge of, an agreement of the resource team’s purpose and goals, realistic expectations of each other, motivational factors, a common experience that the resource team is valuable, relationships with participants, knowledge of each other and feeling secure in one's own subject and role, competence development that comes from the use of a resource team, as well as preparations in advance of resource teams. This can be seen clearly in context of selected theory and research. The thesis also shows that replacement of school staff is a problem for continuity and relationship building in resource teams.
The thesis has a fundamentally positive understanding of resource teams and sees interdisciplinary collaboration as a foundation for them. For further research, it would be necessary to focus on where and how resource teams are used and why they possibly may not be used. Preventive and action-oriented research will also be appropriate regarding the problem of the replacement of school staff in Northern Norway, and possibly in other districts in the country, that may be exposed to the same matter in question.
