New technology and improvement of existing technological solutions are the starting point for several digitalization processes. At the Department of Pathology, St. Olav's Hospital, digital pathology was introduced about three years ago. The purpose being to handle increasing demands for rapid diagnosis and lay the foundation for future development of the department. The introduction of digital pathology can have several effects for the workplace. Employees may therefore have different experiences and opinions on what digital pathology may entail. This has been the starting point for this master project. The aim is to investigate the following research question:
How does the work at a pathological laboratory change when pathology is digitalized?
The case study is based on qualitative data from literature searches, interviews with employees, digital observation, and a review of the company's own documents. The primary method was interviewing six employees, all of whom were employed at the department. This was supported by the secondary methods of observation and document analysis. In addition, a complementary literature review was conducted with the aim of elucidating current theory and acquiring a rich understanding of the setting. Through a socio-technical perspective, the study will help to shed light on how employees at the Department of Pathology relate to digital pathology.
The results show that digital pathology has both advantages and disadvantages. It leads to more tasks for the laboratory scientist, but also contributes to a more varied workday. The physicians in pathology get a new tool that they can use for diagnosis which also simplifies interaction with others. At the same time, it varies how much the physicians choose to use digital slides. The microscope is still important, and it will not be superfluous yet.
Digital pathology causes a need for more knowledge among all the various employees. It is about learning how the technology can be used, as well as how it can be utilized. This will require both time and resources. At the same time, a more sophisticated competence may benefit the department and make it better able to develop further. Digital pathology can also lead to more distinction between different professions. At the same time, the department has, through previous digitization processes, shown that it is both able to change and create new ways of collaboration. Also, a future with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) is now one step closer.
