Abstract
Communication is a broad topic that can be defined in different ways. The focus of this thesis is the communication aspect of the construction industry. More specifically, how the various actors in a turnkey contract communicate during the implementation phase.
The thesis used a qualitative research design to analyse how communication flows between actors in a turnkey contract, as well as which communication channels are used by the contractor, consultant, subcontractor and developer. The goal of this thesis is to study how various actors communicate and gain a better understanding of how communication between them works. It is essential to emphasize that the goal of this task is not to discover communication difficulties, but rather provide the reader with a better knowledge of the communication flow and channels in a turnkey contract. Theories that explain the communication process, networks and directions have been used to explain the flow of communication.
The data was collected using a phenomenological technique, by interviewing five distinct actors who works in a construction project during the implementation phase.
Meetings and web hotels are two of the most popular communication channels, according to the study’s findings. Furthermore, the research revealed that the communication flow and channels between the actors in the upper and lower parts of the project organization are clearly separated. The upper part of the project organization, which includes the developer, consultant, and contractor management, is characterized by formal, clear and traceable communication, whereas the lower part, which includes project engineers and subcontractors, is characterized by informal and frequent communication.
