Abstract
This master thesis analyzes the videogame Mosaic by Krillbite Studios. The videogame is about a man who lives in a dystopic surveillance society. As a part of the introduction, I explore the relationship between videogames and the traditional form of games, to get a better understanding of videogames ability to tell a narrative and its position as a multimodal medium. The analysis studies the society in Mosaic through concepts like infrastructure and glitch, where infrastructure is defined as a society’s foundational structure for organization and control of humans. Glitches are interruptions in these infrastructures. Using concepts from Michel Foucault like the panopticon and biopolitics I explore the controlling functions these have on the videogame’s society. Continuing, non-places are connected to Gilles Deleuze’s concept of control society. The glitches found within the infrastructures of Mosaic is represented by nature, color and music. These glitches become the reason for the avatars ability to free himself from the oppressive infrastructure he has been living in.
