Denne oppgaven viser hvordan
Reagans politikk ble gjenspeilet i media. De tre saksområdene økonomi, utenrikspolitikk og
verdipolitikk preget Reagans presidentskap. I valgkampen 1984 havnet alle tre på avisenes
dagsorden.
blir diskutert i oppgaven.
preger verdipolitikken.
Oppgaven er segmentert i to deler. Her blir
det gjort en analyse av Reagans selvbiografi, An American Life, og Martin Andersons
Revolution: The Reagan Legacy.
utvalgte aviser. Avisene som er valgt er New York Times, Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning
News, The Los Angeles Times og The Baltimore Sun. Perioden som blir analysert er fra 3.
september – 6. november 1984.
valgkampen? 3)Var den politiske dagsordenen i valgkampen gunstig for Reagan?
dc.description.abstract | Today, there exists a misconception Reagan's relationship with the media. This paper shows how
Reagan's policies were reflected in the media. The three issues, economic policy, foreign policy
and social policy (verdipolitikk) characterized Reagan's presidency. In the 1984 election
campaign, all three ended up on the newspaper's agenda. As a result, Reagan received clearly
reported newspaper coverage for his policies. The newspapers also gave a lot of column space to
his opponent, Walter Mondale, but not in areas where Mondale had high credibility.
The paper concludes that Reagan gained a high level of credibility by focusing heavily on
economic policy in his first term as president. The credibility is reflected by the newspapers and
in the population. Economics is a topic that also extends into the other policy areas discussed in
the thesis. Specific policies being discussed are tax increases, the Balanced-Budget Amendment,
SDI/Star Wars, negotiations with the Soviet Union and how nostalgia and values characterize
social policy.
The paper is segmented into two parts. Part one (chapters 3 and 4) addresses Reagan's policies.
Section 1 includes an analysis of Reagan's autobiography, An American Life, and Martin
Anderson's Revolution: The Reagan Legacy. Section 2 (chapters 5 and 6) includes a discourse
analysis of five selected newspapers. The newspapers selected are the New York Times, the
Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, The Los Angeles Times and The Baltimore Sun.
The period analyzed is from 3 September to 6 November 1984.
The thesis statement is: Was the newspapers' coverage of the Reagan administration's election
campaign in line with the administration's own wishes?
The thesis statement has been broken down into three sub-questions. 1)What is the
administration's policy and how was it carried out? 2)What do the newspapers report on Reagan's
policies during the campaign? 3)Was the political agenda of the campaign favorable to Reagan?
