This bachelor thesis is written about the development of a web application for youngchildren in grade 1.-5. in the Norwegian School System. The purpose of the applicationis to let children solve problems in mathematics using the number line as a tool. Theclients goal of this project is to explore whether children become more motivated towork with the number line, and whether they develop their skills in mathematicalreasoning in a different way when using such an application, compared to using atraditional number line on paper.
The web application has been designed with inspiration from other popular learningapplications. Kahoot and Duolingo have been researched as learning applications thatare fun and motivating to use.
During the project, emphasis has been placed on user-friendliness and a fun userinterface. Juiciness is a concept that has arisen in connection with game development, and during the project it has been investigated what juicy elements can actually mean. The application uses various tools that create a positive expression and are suitable forthe target group.
It has been discovered that game-based learning can be used to make learningactivities engaging and motivating. This thesis has investigated how differentgamification elements can be used in a learning application in order to make itmotivating for young school students.
The result of the bachelor project is a web application that offers the students severaltask sets, where each task set contains several tasks with varying levels of difficulty. With the use of agile development, the web application has been developed throughiterations, and there has been regular communication with the client and a good flow ofwork tasks. One of the main findings from the thesis is that gamification can be suitableto use in learning contexts, and preferably together with an appropriate amount ofjuiciness. Gamification and juiciness are never enough to increase learning outcomes bythemselves, but can be good aids if used to highlight some already recognized learningmethods.
