Abstract
This Master thesis analyzes the collection of novellas Ansiktet som solen (1996), writtenby Anne B. Ragde, in the light of classical and modern novella theory. The theory consistsof a review of the novella’s historical development and modern tradition, in addition torelevant narratological theory. Based on this, the thesis examines how Ansiktet som solenrelates to the conventions of the novella genre. The background for this thesis is a projectrelated to the development of the genre novella. In this way, the thesis contributes torecent research as it analyzes a novella from more recent times, taking into account theclassic European novella, which was introduced by Giovanni Boccaccio in the mid-14thcentury.The thesis has used the method Close Reading, reading three selected novellas, which will represent the collection's characteristic genre features and themes. Both in formand method, the book Novellen – Teori og analyse (2016), written by Annemette Hejlsted,is widely used in the thesis. The analysis model consists of seven sections that she uses todefine the novella. The seven sections are fiction, character, event, plot, narration, prose, and realism (Hejlsted, 2016, s. 15). The analysis of Ansiktet som solen chosennovellas itself is based on these seven genre features.Through the readings of Anne B. Ragde's novellas, it is possible to find severalinterpretations of the genre. Thematically, it seems that she is trying to outline analternative female figure, by dealing with dirty and grotesque reality. The analysis findingspoint to a different and an unusual representation of women. Particular attention is paid tohow Ragde uses the polemical character of the novella to shed light on themes related tofeminist values. This is evident in the various realistic female figures who areunderestimated, prejudiced, and oppressed by men. The conclusion of the thesis is thatRagde breaks out of various traditions of the novella, but that she also relates to it throughan excessive theme and framework function.
