Billedlig Ambivalens: Den Spiseforstyrrede Kropp i Samtidskunsten

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg tre fotoprosjekter fra samtidskunstscenen som alle tar utgangspunkt i spiseforstyrrelser som tematisk bakteppe. Disse prosjektene består av “Nil by mouth” (2001) av Felicia Webb, “Zweiunddreissig Kilo” (2008) av Ivonne Thein, og langtidsprosjektet On Eating Disorders av Laia Abril, hvor denne oppgaven vil fokusere på underkapittel nummer to og tre [av fire] — “Thinspiration” (2012) og “The Epilogue” (2014). Oppgaven vil blant annet anvende idéer fra affektteori, og mediespesifikke perspektiver av Roland Barthes og Susan Sontag, for å se nærmere på hvilken rolle disse verkene spiller i møtet med publikum. I tillegg gjøres det rede for kunstverkenes potensial til å påvirke betrakteren, hvordan bildene reflekterer tendenser i samfunnet, og følgelig hvordan de kan si noe om samtidens forståelse av spiseforstyrrelser. Affekt, det tidstypiske, og representasjon gjennom fravær er særlige fokusområder i analysen.

This master's thesis focuses on three photo projects from the contemporary art scene, all of which address eating disorders thematically. These projects consist of "Nil by mouth" (2001) by Felicia Webb, "Zweiunddreissig Kilo" (2008) by Ivonne Thein, and the long-term project On Eating Disorders by Laia Abril, where this thesis will concentrate on the second subchapter and the third [out of four] — "Thinspiration” (2012) and“ The Epilogue” (2014). The thesis will [among other things] apply ideas from affect theory, as well as media-specific perspectives by Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag, to take a closer look at the role these artworks play in an encounter with an audience. In addition, the art's potential to influence the viewer will be addressed, along with how the images can be seen as reflections of cultural trends, and consequently how they can say something about the contemporary understanding of eating disorders. Affect, the time-typical, and representation through absence, are especially areas which the thesis undertakes in its analysis.
