This bachelor thesis examines and discusses how sympathy is made with the main characters in Squid game and Parasite. By using Murray Smith’s structure of sympathy, the analysis of each film will be compared by the end of the thesis. Cognitive film theory is the focus, and mainly then Smiths structure of sympathy, but also supporting terms from Margrethe Bruun Vaage and Carl Plantinga with others. This is done to explore which cinematic means matter the most in creating character engagement and what the difference between them are.
