Draktsmykkefunn som kilde til merovingertidens samfunn: En komparativ studie av koniske spenner og ryggknappspenner

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en komparativ studie av koniske spenner og ryggknappspenner fra Merovingertiden i Trøndelag. Den omhandler draktsmykkene som finnes i NTNU Vitenskapsmuseets digitale samlinger og deres funnfrekvens, utbredelse og sosiale funksjon. Smykketypene sammenlignes med hverandre og det undersøkes hvordan de kan gi uttrykk for ulike eliter og deres roller i samfunnet. Det etableres tolkninger av merovingertidens samfunn med smykkematerialets kontekst og samfunnsfunksjon i sammenheng med den samtidige ‘Late Antique Little Ice Age’ og endringer i sosial praksis. Ryggknappspennene og de koniske spennenes funksjon fastslås med støtte i gravmateriale og sammenligning mellom typene. De viser begge tydelige assosiasjoner til ulike sosiale eliter.

This is a comparative study of the Conical and Disc-on-bow brooches of the Merovingian period in Trøndelag. It concerns the brooches registered in the NTNU University Museums online collections and their frequency, prevalence and social function. The brooches are compared to one another and it’s examined how they can illustrate examples of different elites and their roles in society. Different interpretations of the Merovingian time period are established on the basis of the brooches’ context and function in conjunction with the contemporary ‘Late Antique Little Ice Age’ and changes in the social practices. The Disc-on-bow brooches and Conical brooches social functions are determined with burial material and comparison between the types. They both show clear associations with different social elites.
