The purpose of the master’s thesis is to develop a model for the control room of the future that takes into account the operator’s wishes and needs while at the same time contribute to increased production and better fish welfare. The literature and preparatory work describe a rapid technological development in the industry, which leads to a challenge in connecting the technology and equipment in a larger system. The topic is relevant in regards to the Norway’s desire to become the leading seafood nation. Therefore, the research question in the master’s thesis is; "How to design control rooms for the automated fish farms of the future that will provide operators with an optimal Decision support system and Situation Awareness". Four sub-researchquestions have been prepared to better answer the thesis’ main research questions:
• What data and information are needed to achieve optimal operation?• How does automation and technological development help to reduce the environmental contamination?• How is fish welfare maintained and improved through automation?• How to take care of the operator in the development of the control room?
To answer sub-research questions, the methods literature search, semi-structured interviews and design thinking are used. The literature search describes how the aquaculture industry works today and something about the development that is happening. The semistructured interviews contribute to shed light on several challenges, development projects and wishes for the industry. In total, there were five informants, they were interviewed twice each. The informants have previous or current experience with the operation of fish farms. The Design thinking method has been used to increase the work of improving the modeled setup for a control room. Through the work on the master thesis, a simplified model is formed for a control room that has a good starting point to cover the problem mentioned above. Tasks for the operation of fish farms that depend on each other are put together in modes. Using iterative rounds of developing and improving the model, provided an opportunity to test and improve usability. It was revealed that the accuracy of a Decision Support System depends on the number of sensors and equipment used, in addition to how it is presented to the operator. The survey shows that too much information can work against its purpose.
