Middelalderens inntog : Det middelalderske formspråket i Gerhard Munthes vevkartong "Inntoget i Myklegård"

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker formspråket og innholdet i vevkartongen Inntoget i Myklegård av Gerhard Munthe, laget i 1899, og viser hvordan dette har knytninger til dekorative tekstiler fra tidlig middelalder. Samtidig, så peker oppgaven også på hvordan bruken av dette middelalderske formspråket henger sammen med kulturelle strømninger i samtiden verket ble skapt i, og hvordan dette kulminerer i en «gjenoppdagelse» av middelalderkunstens form og innhold rundt århundreskiftet 1800 til 1900 i Norge, i en skapelse av norsk medievalisme. Her fokuserer teksten på medievalismens oppblomstring i Norge som ny nasjon, men viser også til landets sterke sammenhenger med Storbritannias medievalisme. Oppgaven omtaler også Snorres Kongesagaer, som er et middelalderverk som førte til økt interesse for middelalderen i både Storbritannia og Norge. Sagnene i denne boken er tilknyttet innholdet i Inntoget i Myklegård, og oppgaven viser til hvorfor dette er en viktig del av verkets middelalderske formspråk.

This thesis examines the formal language and content of the weaving cartoon Inntoget I Myklegård by Gerhard Munthe, made in 1899, and shows how this is connected to decorative textiles from the early Middle Ages. At the same time, the thesis also points to how the use of this medieval formal language is connected to certain contemporary cultural currents at the time of the cartoon’s creation, and how this culminates in a “rediscovery” of the formal language and content of medieval art around the turn of the century in Norway, in a creation of the Norwegian medievalism. Here, the text has its focus on the surge of medievalism in Norway as a new nation, while also looking at the country’s strong connections to Britain’s medievalism. The thesis also mentions Snorre’s Kongesagaer as a work of medieval literature that led to increased interest for the Middle Ages in both Britain and Norway. The legends of this book are tied to the content of Inntoget I Myklegård, and this thesis shows why this is an important part of the cartoon’s medieval formal language.
