Barns opplevelser i møte med sykepleier på sykehus - Man vil jo være i trygge hender

Abstract

En sykehusinnleggelse kan oppleves som skremmende for barn og unge. Mye av tidligere forskning om barn på sykehus har vært basert på foreldres og sykepleiers erfaringer, og dette samsvarer ikke nødvendigvis med barns egne erfaringer. Hensikt: Studiens hensikt var å utforske barn og unges egne opplevelser og erfaringer i møte med sykepleier på sykehus. Metode: Kvalitativt forskningsdesign med bruk av semistrukturerte intervju. Seks ungdommer i alderen tolv til seksten år ble rekruttert fra en database ved bruk av strategisk utvalg. Systematisk tekstkondensering ble benyttet til å analysere datamaterialet. Resultater: Resultatene presenteres i tre hovedkategorier; «Informasjonsformidling», «trygghetsskapende tiltak» og «faktorer som kan føre til stress og usikkerhet». De viser til at barn og unges informasjonsbehov er stort, oppfatningen av god kommunikasjon påvirkes av sykepleierens formidlingsevne, Sykepleiers fremtreden og væremåte er sentral for barn og unges trygghetsfølelse, og barn og unge har delte meninger om medbestemmelse på sykehus. Konklusjon: Studien viser at sykepleieren har stor påvirkning på barns sykehusopplevelse. Barn på sykehus har et stort informasjonsbehov, og oppfatningen av god kommunikasjon påvirkes av tidspunkt, situasjon og sykepleierens formidlingsevne. Sykepleierens væremåte beskrives også som avgjørende for trygghetsopplevelsen. Resultatene viste at barn ønsket å bli inkludert, og hadde delte meninger om egen medbestemmelse. Studien bidrar med innsikt i barns egne erfaringer fra sykehus. Det er behov for ytterligere forskning for å få økt kunnskap om barns sykehusopplevelse.

A hospital admission can be intimidating for children. Previous studies on that topic have shown that the experience from hospitalised children were often based on the understanding of parents or hospital staff and did not necessarily comply with the child’s own experience. Aim: This study/ aims to firstly explore children’s perspective and experience through their encounter with a nurse upon admissions or hospital visits. Method: It will do so by analysing the qualitative research used to interview the patients. Six patients from the age of 12-16 were strategically selected from a database for this study. The method of analysis utilised was the “systematic text condensation” (STC). Results: the results will be presented into three main topics: “distribution of information”, “safety measures and elements affecting children” and “stress related factors in hospital”. Secondly, the study will show how a nurse’s behaviour and ability to communicate information can impact a child’s experience and ability to feel safe a hospital environment. The study furthermore shows different perspectives on issues such as safety and decision-making young patients experience in the hospital. Conclucion: In conclusion, the findings in this study shows that the nurse plays a major role in children’s hospitalization. Children have differing perceptions of their hospital experience based on various aspects. Children in hospital often experience a loss of control and appreciate input/assistance regarding their say in a matter. One example could be communicating a level of information suited the patients age, or how a nurse’s behaviour and personal traits can contribute to an environment where children feel safe and included in decision-making. The research of this study contributes to create an understanding of a child’s perception and experience regarding hospital admissions. More research is recommended to gain further insight in children’s perceptions of hospitalization.
