Abstract
Title: Challenges related to stimuli sensitivity in children with autism spectrum disorder in emergency departments.
Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to illuminate the challenges that may arise when children with autism spectrum disorder and stimuli sensitivity receive health care in emergency departments for children, as well as presenting how the nurse can handle these challenges.
Research question: Stimuli sensitivity in children with autism spectrum disorder in emergency departments for children: What challenges can arise? How can the nurse handle these challenges?
Method: The thesis is a literature study and is based upon research articles and literature. The thesis is linked to Kari Martinsen's theory of care.
Results: The main results show that challenges that arise are attached to the fact that the process of care and the environment in the emergency department expose the child for various stimuli. In addition, the organization of the department can expose the child for additional debit. Children with autism spectrum disorder have varying degrees of stimuli sensitivities. There is also a wide variation in which stimuli that lead to challenges for the individual patient. This requires care and environment to be adapted to the patient. The nurse can meet the individual needs of each child through knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and cooperation with the child and the parents. Flexibility and patience are considered important traits of the nurse.
Conclusion: Nursing must be individualized in order to deal with the challenges associated with the child’s stimuli sensitivity in emergency departments. This require the nurse to have knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and the ability to cooperate with the child and the family. Organizational factors such as resource limitations are of importance for the nurse’s possibilities to meet the unique needs of each child.
