Abstract

Jeg har lenge hatt en interesse for keramikk og prosessen bak den, men ikke før jeg begynte med denne oppgaven forsto jeg hvor utrolig spennende og viktig keramikk har vært gjennom tidene. Jeg ønsket derfor å få innblikk i den store verden av kinesisk keramikk, og hvorfor interessen ble så stor i vesten. I denne oppgaven undersøker jeg eksport porselenets påvirkning fra europa med utgangspunkt i terrinen i NKIMs samlinger. Problemstillingen blir derfor: Hvordan ble terrinen fra NKIM tilpasset er Europeisk marked som en del av Qing-dynastiets produksjon av eksport porselen? Et spørsmål jeg stilte meg selv i det jeg gikk inn i denne oppgaven var, finnes det en ‘ren kinesisk kunst’ eller finnes det en gjensidig påvirkning mellom blant annet Europa og Kina? Jeg vil se på både terrinens form, teknikken og ornamentene for å vise hvordan den ble tilpasset for det Europeiske markedet.

I have long had an interest in ceramics and the process behind it, but not until I started with this thesis did I realize how incredibly exciting and important ceramics have been through the ages. I therefore wanted to gain insight into the great world of Chinese ceramics, and why the interest became so great in the West. In this thesis, I investigate the influence Europe had export porcelain from China based on the terrine in NKIM's collections. The problem is therefore: How was the terrine from NKIM adapted to the European market as part of the Qing dynasty's production of export porcelain? One question I asked myself when I went into this thesis was, is there a 'pure Chinese art' or is there a mutual influence between, among others, Europe and China? I will look at both the shape of the tureen, the technique and the ornaments to show how it was adapted for the European market.
