This master thesis asks whether Disney’s animated, female protagonists can be said to be good role models for young children. The thesis challenges the theories and criticisms voiced by Disney critics like Peggy Orenstein, Henry Giroux and Sarah Rothschild. These critics claims that all female protagonists sends negative messages, and are bad role models for children based on their looks, personalities, themes, romantic stories, and their relationships to family. This thesis proves that this is not the case by examining several of the most prominent female protagonists, and by closely analysing three of the most interesting and complex of these protagonists, Mulan (Mulan, 1998, Bancroft, Cook), Lilo (Lilo & Stitch, 2002, Sanders, DeBlois) and Anna (Frozen, 2013, Buck, Lee).
