Gustav Mahler: Hans identitet og opphav, gjenspeilet i musikken?

Abstract

Denne oppgaven er en studie av Gustav Mahlers (1860-1911) musikk og identitet, og om de to aspektene av komponisten har en klar sammenheng eller ikke. Videre studeres hans litterære, filosofiske og religiøse preferanser, samtidig som spørsmålet om hans opphav og preferanse av kultur skal besvares. Musikken som studeres er hans tre første symfonier og utdrag fra sangsyklusene "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" og "Des Knaben Wunderhorn".

Målet mitt med denne oppgaven er å finne ut hvordan Mahler tilpasset seg i et samfunn der antisemittiske holdninger begynte å danne seg, og om han lot sin personlige identitet syntes i musikken. Ut ifra biografiske tekster og studier angående Mahlers musikk har jeg funnet ut hvordan den historiske konteksten rundt den tid musikken ble skrevet var, og videre hvordan han lot konteksten i det samfunnet han levde og jobbet i påvirke ham.

This thesis is a study of the music and identity of Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), and if these two aspects of the composer has a clear connection or not. Furthermore, I will study his literary, philosophical and religious preferences, while the question regarding his origins and cultural preference will be answered. The music I have chosen to study consists of his three first symphonies and excerpts of his two song cycles "Lieder eines fahrendes Gesellen" and "Des Knaben Wunderhorn".

My goal with this thesis is to discover how Mahler adapted in a society where anti-Semitic attitudes rose, and if he let his personal identity show in his music. Using biographical texts and studies regarding Mahler’s music I have found the historical context in which each of the three symphonies were written, for so then to find out if he let the context in the society in which he worked in affect him in any way.
