Abstract
The thesis examines activism in Norwegian samtidsdans (contemporary dance) and how dance activism has come about at Klimafestivalen §112 in Oslo from 2014 to 2019. The perspective taken is performance theory and practice within a non-institutional context. Inspired by the recent increase in street activism, such as for example the school strikes for climate, the main purpose of the thesis has been to map samtidsdans in activist contexts in Norway. Politics, society, art and activism are connected and form the basis for an investigation of the way performance art and dance activisms are linked to performance and performativity. Data collected from two qualitative research interviews has been analysed and categorized, leading to themes such as intentionality, structure, sound, movement, space andcontext. This analysis, together with the analysis of three performances; Stemmebånd, KjærNe duo and a dance happening, forms the basis for answering the research question in the central chapters of the thesis. From the perspective of performance theory and practice, the analysis shows that context directs communication. The context of Klimafestivalen §112 shifted the communication from performance towards performativity in different aspects. The two deciding factors, which distinguished the performances from each other, were the use of performance space, and the interaction between performers and audience. A constructed scale, with performance at one end and performativity at the other, structures the interplay and action between unreality and reality in which the three performed pieces were placed.
