Summary
Research question“How can a voluntary organization help a participant to manage the transition to society?”
BackgroundFormer prison inmates can receive help by a voluntary organization to manage the transition back to society.
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to bring light to the subjective opinions on how the participants and employees at the organization experience the rehabilitation program.
MethodUsing a qualitative method, I have conducted in-depth interviews of six informants, where three are employees of the organization and three are participants at the organization.
ResultsThis study shows how the rehabilitation program at Jarlegården reaches the inner motivation of the participants. Due to the safety the participants are feeling at the organization, it leaves room for them to develop and wish to refrain from crime. According to my studies, this development takes place because the employees provide comprehensive and individual care and support to each participant. The drug-free social network ensures that the participants have good role models around them, which facilitates the participants to learn law-abiding attitudes and ways of behaving. Finally, the results show how the activities the participants participate in allows for interest, knowledge and skill development. To feel secure in life, to have a healthy network and to participate in activities makes a visible and enable them to live a law-abiding life. Above, I have described what according to my studies, works well in Jarlegårdens rehabilitation program. Jarlegårdens support of the former inmates increases the chances of coping with the transition back to society.
