For unge
Arbeidstakere uten formell kompetanse står ofte i fare
helsetilstand.
dc.description.abstract | Mental symptoms can lead to emotional, cognitive and social problems. For young people,
these challenges can make it difficult to follow through their studies.
In the constantly changing society, education has become more important. The number of
professions demanding manual labor has reduced due to shutting down of the industry.
Employees without formal competence often stay at risk of being outcompeted in favor of
qualified applicants. Helping students to complete their studies is therefore an important task.
At the same time, students who are struggling mentally, often have demands that are difficult
to meet. Educational institutions try to support these students by designing the education in a
universal way, so that it is accessible regardless of functional ability or health status. In order
to ensure the students' ability for equal participation, universal design must, if necessary, be
supplemented with individual accommodation. These principles are enshrined in the Act on
Universities and Colleges and the Act on Gender Equality and the Prohibition of
Discrimination.
Despite this, the research shows that though adjustments are seemingly good, there are still
many students who do not use them. Some campuses have a limited choice of aids. At other
campuses, professionals may lack competence in mental health problems, diversity and
facilitation methods. Because mental illness is still a taboo subject, some students are
reluctant to reveal that they are struggling mentally. In this case, the facilitation is often not
requested in fear of standing out, being stigmatized and discriminated.
My intention with the thesis is to discuss the topic of mental health problems in education
from different angles using theories and research material.
