Det overnaturliges nærvær i en rasjonell verden - En analyse av gotiske motiv og steder i André Bjerkes De dødes tjern (1942)

Abstract

Dette masterarbeidet tar for seg en undersøkelse av det overnaturliges kobling til gotiske motiv og tema i romanen De dødes tjern (1942). I forlengelse av dette undersøkes også forbindelsen mellom det gotiske og psykoanalytiske kjernemotiv som ødipus-komplekset, incest-motivet og generelle psykoanalytiske teorier.

Oppgaven baserer seg på en hermeneutisk nærlesing som tar for seg motivanalyser med forankring i gotisk teori. Motivene som blir analysert er blant annet de psykologiske vitnemålene, dagboken og Bjørn Werners drømmer, og ulike steder som har en overnaturlig forankring som kommer tydelig frem gjennom gotisk teori og en intertekstuell lesning. Stedene som blir analysert i denne oppgaven er skogen, hytten og tjernet. Skogen blir koblet til det labyrintiske, mens hytten blir koblet til det tradisjonelle slottet i gotisk litteratur. Tjernet blir gjennom en nordisk myte og intertekstualitet koblet sammen med det religiøse helvetet. Alle elementene som blir analysert har en sterk forankring i gotisk teori.

This master thesis covers an examination of the connection between the supernatural and the gothic motifs and themes in the novel De dødes tjern (1942). In extension, the assignment is covering the connection between the Gothic and the psychoanalytic core motifs, like the Oedipal complex, incest-motif and some general psychoanalytic theories.

The assignment is based on a hermeneutic close reading that covers an analysis of motifs based on the Gothic theory. The analysis will cover the psychological testimonies, like the diary of Bjørn Werner and his dreams. In addition, the assignment will be covering an analysis of the different places and making a connection between the supernatural and some of the places. The places covered in the analysis are the wood, the cabin and the lake. The analysis will show a connection between the wood and the labyrinthic and a connection between the cabin and the traditional, Gothic castle. Furthermore, the analysis will show a connection between the lake and the religious ‘hell’ by analysing the motif using a Nordic myth and intertextuality. All the elements in the analysis have a strong connection to the Gothic theory.
