Abstract
Over several years an abundance of different binders have been used to stabilize the groundto achieve a higher strength in soft and clayey soil. A new binder that has been used morerecently is Multicem. Multicem is often sold as a mixture of 50% cement and 50% CKD.There are few tests performed on samples with a share of CKD more than 50%. CKD isoften listed as a biproduct. More use of this substance will reduce the CO2-emissions.
For this master three different binder mixtures with Multicem were tested with threedifferent amounts to see if the use of more CKD could increase the strength of the soil.To get more realistic results, the samples were tested with a triaxial apparatus instead ofa uniaxial which is most common. The results show that the mixtures with most cementgive the highest strength, and the samples with only CKD gave lower. The amount ofmixture did not impact the strength greatly. Highest strength measured was with anamount of 75kg/ m3 with a 50/50 mixture of Multicem. The sample with 75Kg/m3 and75/25 CKD/Cement gave the highest ratio between strength and CO2 emission with ashear strength of 130KPa at 2% strain. The E-module for the samples showed a lineartrend. Low E-module for samples with a lot of CKD, and higher for samples with morecement. The use of only CKD proved to not give sufficient strength, although use of 75/25CKD/Cement can be useful for instances where the requirements for strength is not thathigh.
Simultaneously several temperature measurements for the different binders were done. These were done to give a better indication of what one could expect the temperature tobe in the ground when mixed with clay. The experiments were done in both 20°C and 8°C.At 8 °C the reactions were much slower than at 20°C. With more cement the temperaturedevelopment went slower. Highest achieved temperature at 103°C was achieved with amixture of only CKD at 20°C.
It is recommended in the future to do more research with mixture content and differentbinders, including different cell pressure to get a more accurate result. Additionally, itseen as interesting to look further into the temperature effect during the curing process ofthe KS-piles.
