In this study, we model the spatio-temporal spread of an infectious disease, using Bayesianinversion, unifying a data assimilation method, the spatio-temporal ensemble Kalmanmodel with the infectious disease model. The variables of interest are the infected eventcounts and intensity. We present a necessary background on the Bayesian inversionand spatio-temporal models. The infectious disease model is presented. We connectthe infectious disease model and the ensemble Kalman model in order to use availableobservations in the modelling of the spread of the infectious disease. The unified modelis demonstrated on three different synthetic examples; a temporal, a regular spatiotemporaland a spatio-temporal with train station example, testing the model limits. Both ensemble Kalman filter and smoother are demonstrated for all three examples. The true scenario, prior model, and the posterior model, made up of the filtered andsmoothed posterior distributions are presented for each of the examples. The ensembleKalman model performs satisfactory for both the temporal and spatio-temporal example, showing promising results. The train station example has proven to be somewhat of achallenge, and a revision of the model would be necessary for improving the results.
