Hillforts in Rogaland – Hillfort Functions in Northern Jæren during the Roman Iron Age and Migration Period

Abstract

Bacheloroppgaven handler om funksjoner av bygdeborger i Rogaland i løpet av eldre jernalderen. Dette er besvart ved å analysere og diskutere fem bygdeborger i Nord-Jæren. Målet med denne oppgaven er å forstå bygdeborgen som et militæranlegg med flere funksjoner. Metodene som var brukt var befaring og kart- og landskapsanalyse. Bygdeborgenes funksjoner var analysert ut ifra deres tilgjengelighet, mur type, og plassering i forhold til ferdselsårer, andre bygdeborger og jernalder sentere. Kulturmiljøet, moderne militæraktivitet og bygdeborgens multifunksjoner er også diskutert.

Resultatene viser at de fem bygdeborgene har typiske kjennetegner; alle hadde forsvarsegenskaper. Nesten alle bygdeborgene er knyttet til moderne militæraktivitet. På grunn av bygdeborgens forbindelse med religion, politikk, økonomi og sosial hierarki, hadde de multifunksjoner.

This thesis is about the function of hillforts in Rogaland during the early Iron Age. This is investigated by analyzing and discussing five hillforts in Northern Jæren from the Roman Iron Age and Migration Period. The aim of this thesis is to understand how hillforts functioned as multifunctional military facilities. The methods used were field inspections and mapping and landscape analysis. The hillforts’ functions were analyzed in terms of their accessibility, wall type, and proximity to routes, other hillforts, and Iron Age power centers. The Iron Age cultural environment and modern military activity are discussed, along with hillforts’ multifunctional connections.

The results show that the five hillforts have mostly typical hillfort characteristics. All have defense features. Interestingly, almost all the hillforts are associated to modern military activity. These hillforts were most likely multifunctional, in terms of their connections to religion, politics, economics, and social hierarchy.
