Musikk i krig - Funksjon, bruk og nytte

Abstract

Denne oppgåva handlar om musikk i militæret og bruken av musikk i krig. Han sett ulike musikalske funksjonar i ein diakron samanheng og visar korleis dei har utvikla seg over tid. Gjennom dei fire utvalde krigane, den amerikanske borgarkrigen, første og andre verdskrig og Irak-krigen, ser ein korleis bruken og funksjonane både endrar seg og korleis krigføring var forma av dei. Oppgåva har til hensikt å undersøkje problemstillinga: Korleis har musikken i militæret vore med å forma krigføring frå den amerikanske borgarkrigen og fram til Irak-krigen, og korleis har musikkens funksjonar endra seg over tid? Oppgåva forklarar ulike musikalske funksjonar i militæret. Signalkorpset og hovudkorpset var viktige i militær samanheng, der dei fylte ulike rollar både i leiren og på slagmarka. Musikken var mellom anna ei viktig kjelde for motivasjon for soldatar. Oppgåva visar korleis bruken endra seg og at orkestra til ein viss grad forsvinn i moderne krigføring. Oppgåva går også inn på musikk brukt i rekruttering og propaganda. Bruken av musikk som våpen og torturreiskap, ein heilt ny måte å bruke musikk i krig på som ein såg under Irak-krigen, er også teke med.

This thesis talks about music in the military and the use of music in war. It puts different musical functions into a diachronic context and shows how they have developed over time. Through the four chosen wars, The American Civil War, The First and Second World War and the Iraq-War, one can see how the use and functions both change and how the warfare was shaped by them. The thesis will research the thesis question: How has music in the military shaped warfare from the American Civil War and to the Iraq-War, and how has the musical functions changed over time? The thesis explains different musical functions in the military. The field music and the band of music were important in a military context, where they filled different roles both in the camp and on the battlefield. Music was for instance an important source of motivation for soldiers. The thesis shows how the use changed and how the bands to a certain extent disappears in modern warfare. The thesis also talks about music used in recruitment and propaganda. The use of music as a weapon and tool for torture, a completely new way to use music in war that was seen during the Iraq-War, is also brought in.
