Spain's on fire!: Economic Crisis, Public opinion and Public policies towards immigration in Spain
Abstract
The Spanish economy has been dramatically hit by the financial crisis which led the country into one of the biggest economic recessions in its history. To what extent has this event influenced the public opinion and perception towards immigration in Spain? In addition, what are the main shifts implemented in the public policies on immigration by the Spanish government?
In this study, I intend to analyze the evolution of the public opinion towards immigration from 2000 to 2010 and the effects of the economic crisis on people’s perception towards immigrants. In the same line, one of my purposes is to determine the trend on the immigration public policies in Spain and whether or not the financial crisis has been a watershed in the shift of the public policies in this country.
Key words: International Migration, Public policy, Public opinion, Economic crisis.
