Abstract
Topic: Does proton therapy have greater usefulness than conventional radiotherapy in the treatment of medulloblastoma of children?
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children's quality of life and long-term side effects are improved by the use of proton therapy contrary to radiotherapy.
Method: It has been conducted a qualitative method based on a literature review. A total of 6 articles are included, illuminiating relevant effects of proton therapy and radiotherapy, including long-term side effects and quality of life.
Results: The results show that proton therapy rather than conventional radiotherapy has potentional benefits to increase quality of life and reduce long-term side effects. Choosing the right treatment for children with medulloblastoma is therefore crucial in order to reduce this.
Conclusion: Radiotherapy generally tends to increase the risk of developing long-term side effects. In contrast, proton therapy has been shown to have a good effect in the treatment of medulloblastoma of children, by minimizing the risk of long-term side effects while increasing the quality of life.
