Summary
Stochastic reservoir characterization of a subsurface is the process of creating a quantitative model of the subsurface based on various geophysical measurements to predict the occurrence of hydrocarbons such as oil and gas. In a scenario such as this, it is natural to adopt a Bayesian framework where geophysical and geological knowledge are combined with measurements of the subsurface to make a prediction of the subsurface with an associated uncertainty level. We consider a specific class of probabilistic models in a Bayesian framework with applications in reservoir characterization. It is of the utmost importance to specify a probabilistic model that fulfills known geophysical relationships that are used to model fluid flow and the ordering of various geological layers. Thus, we focus on the Markov random field model and the Gaussian mixture model. Our focus is on proposing a probabilistic method that allows for partly analytic computation, as this enables efficient stochastic simulation in three dimensions. Samandrag
