Telepresence Quality
Abstract
One aim of a telepresence system is to make users? collaborations become morenatural and gives a more ?accurate? sensation of nearness to the people who areinteracting with other people through the system. There are many factors that candirectly influence people?s perceptions about telepresence systems. This thesishelps to find out what typical factors are and how they can influence the perceptionsof telepresence systems. One of the most important factors that influences the quality a telepresencesystem is delay. Hence, in order to have a control of the delay, a telepresenceexperimental model was established, and a serous of tests had been carried outwith the model. Based on the measurement results, we can conclude that theoptical delay is directly related to the frame rate of the camera and the refreshingrate of the screen. In addition, a lot of stimulus-reaction time measurements had been done.Based on the test results, we got indications that the perception and reaction timeis directly involved with age, tiredness, and concentration of the people using thesystem. The perception and reaction time does not seem to correlate with theeducation of the people using the system. Finally, in order to find out whether the space perception can influence the perceptionand reaction time, two stereoscopic system models had been constructed.A lot of pilot tests had been done with the model. According to the measurements,we can conclude that with the same contents and same frame rates of videos, theperception and reaction time with 3D videos seem to be shorter than that with 2Dvideos.
