MOUNTAINGO: LOCATION-BASED APP TO TRACK AND SHARE MOUNTAIN TREKKING EXPERIENCES
Abstract
Over hele året søker de å utforske naturen. Norwegians, as many others, are very fond of the outdoors. All around the year, they seek out to explorethe nature. This is a healthy activity in many ways. First of all, it is a good cardiovascular exercise whereyou get in contact with the nature. It can also be a social activity. And, on the other hand, it can also be away to get some alone time. There are many aspects of the nature, but this project will focus on trekkingin the mountains. Mountain trekking seem to be getting more attractive among younger generations, and people are eager to track where they’ve been, and more often than not do they like to share theirexperience with others. There is no reward when you go trekking, and people often end up forgettingwhere they have been. There is no useful app that can be used to collect mountain peaks, specifically notin Norway.A location-based game that will track the Global Positioning System (GPS) on the users device wasdeveloped in this project. The application is a continuation of a specialization project the author conductedin fall 2018. It will also make use of fairly new technology, as it takes inspiration from the popular mobilegame Pokemon GO, which affected the users in a good, healthy way [1]. The application developed inthis thesis is be tailored to include the 1000 highest mountain peaks in Norway, giving it a real use casein Norway. Only when in range, you can register a trip to a mountain peak destination. To get some constructive feedback and suggestions, the prototype was tested by a small number ofpeople. The prototype testing was followed up by a short survey This helped to understand what theusers are looking for in an application for trekking in the mountains, and what aspects of the applicationwould motivate the user to go mountain trekking.Based on the evaluation, the application were concluded to have the ability to motivate people to gotrekking in the mountains. The users were overall positive towards the application. A mobile game withthe intention to motivate as many users as possible to go trekking in the mountains, could benefit fromfocusing on both the gamification and the social aspect of the app. They can be seen as equally essentialelements, and were found to motivate users in their own way.
