Abstract
The construction industry in Norway is characterized by a focus on upgrading the transportinfrastructure, despite critically low margins among the contractors. The contract size hasincreased from the range of hundreds of millions up to potentially reach tens of billions ofkroner, and yet the contracting parts may end up in expensive disputes. Productivity in theindustry is said to have declined, and calculation of construction time and time used is atopic of discussion. In addition to this the construction industry has fallen behind ondigitalization, at the same time as the business model of world-leading companies such asFacebook, Amazon, Google and Uber are based on digital data and data analysis.
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to map and describe the status and potential of digitaldata collection used in tunnel excavation. The following research questions wasestablished:
1. How is productivity measured when excavating tunnels today?2. What digital data is collected from the tunnel excavation and how?3. Does the collected data provide sufficient information to quantify productivity?4. How can the collected data be used in tunnelling projects?
This thesis is based on an intensive and qualitative research design where a literature studywas conducted to obtain theory on tunnel excavation, excavation equipment, productivityand digital data collection. A case study was performed on two ongoing projects: E39Svegatjørn – Fanavegen and Fv. 659 Nordøyvegen. Observations, monitoring of activitiesand document studies was performed with the purpose to observe the digital data collectionin action. The systems used for digital data collection was studied in detail using documentstudies from 12 different systems. In addition, 15 interviews were carried out on personnel, both from suppliers for data collection systems and tunnelling contractors.
The scope of the study is limited to the research questions, excavation with drill and blastand the Norwegian tunnelling industry.
Findings show that there is a lack of agreed standard for productivity measurements andthat daily productivity measurements are rarely used. Among the most used productivitymeasurements are piece work calculations, activity capacities and equivalent times. Thismaster’s thesis reveals that there are extensive data collection is done in the tunnellingexcavation and this data is fully usable for productivity measurements, but also for otherforms of data analysis.
Using Microsoft Power BI, the master’s thesis shows how data from several differentsources can be collected and analysed to provide useful information to various roles on atunnel site. There will also be value in the data collection because many of the manualwork operations can be replaced with automatic data collection and sharing betweensystems. This will free up time for the employees that can be used for other value creationin the projects.
Data can provide valuable information and insight that can lead to better decisions, reducedconstruction time, lower emissions, reduced costs and possibility of continuousoptimization. This can lead to increased profitability, optimized calculation of constructiontime, increased productivity and prevention of expensive disputes. The master’s thesistherefore recommends the industry to start collecting, structuring, analysing and toultimately use the collected data for value creation.
