Now a day s usefulness of Social Media can be seen in every sphere of the people s life. Peoples are using social media to communicate with each other, to get entertainment, to create, share and exchange information s, news, views, pictures and videos. Several organizations started using social media to share information to their clients as well as to obtain information from their clients. Even governments in developed countries started using social media to disseminate information to their citizens and to obtain information from their citizens. In this context, the goal of this research is to study potential of social media in context of Nepal and to suggest why developing country Nepal should use social media in its public offices. Similarly this research also tries to identify the potential challenges which might hinder the implementations of social media in the public offices of Nepal.
In order to proceed with this research, literature review about the subject area of the study was conducted. Similarly interviews were conducted with eight past and present NTNU students from Nepal so as to get their understandings regarding the use of social media in the public sectors. The data of these interviews were analyzed along with the literature on the subject.
The results of this research revealed five appealing reasons to use social media in the public offices of Nepal. Social media can be used for communication purposes, to increase transparencies, to increase public participation, to increase efficiency and to improve economy of the public offices of Nepal. Similarly the result of this research also identified two categories of challenges which can hinder the implementation of the social media in the public offices of Nepal. They are challenges related to infrastructure and challenges related to security.
