Abstract
This thesis studies pupils’ history awareness of the Holocaust. I will in this context, examinethe following problem: Do pupils in the 9th step express history awareness in theirunderstanding of the Holocaust? The Problem is illuminated by Erik Lund’ theory of historyawareness and Vibeke Kieding Banik’ understanding of the Holocaust. In order to explain thepupils’ understanding of the Holocaust, I have performed an assignment for witch the pupilshad to explain the concept of the Holocaust. I chose a qualitative approach with texts frompupils as method. In order to answer the problem, I will use the two understandings Lund gives of historyawareness. These two understandings, by means of texts from pupils, will I see if cannot becombined into one understanding. The two understandings are that (1) history awareness isknowledge of the past and (2) history awareness is an interaction between past, present andfuture. The second understanding is the one the curriculum uses for history awareness and it’sthe understanding I want to see if the pupils expresses. The Holocaust is defined as the genocide of the Jews before and during World War II. Mostof the pupils relate the Holocaust to World War II or to the genocide of the Jews. Many of thepupils explain why the Holocaust happened and how it happened.
