dc.description.abstractJob analysis is the process of collecting and analyzing information about jobs, and is considered as the very foundation of a recruitment process. The purpose of this study is to contribute to new knowledge about job analysis by comparing theory and empirical evidence with the practice in five Norwegian companies. Nine interviews, three observations and five job analysis templates formed the basis of a thematic analysis, which revealed six themes: 1) Creating awareness in the recruitment process, 2) which topics are mapped and how are these described in the job description, 3) data collection methods, 4) information sources, 5) challenges in job analysis and 6) quality assessments. The study reveals that Norwegian companies prefer qualitative approaches to job analysis. It appears that the informants are conscious about which topics to map, which data collection methods to use, and what information sources they want to collect data from. There seems to be a gap both in the literature and in the practice in relation to what happens between data collection and completed job description. Nor does it seem that the informants have any routines for evaluating the accuracy or the quality of the job analysis. With inspiration from criteria for qualitative research there have been proposed guidelines on how to increase the quality of job analysis practice. More research is requested on how to carry out and evaluate qualitative job analysis in order to increase the quality of practice and facilitate knowledge about an area within job analysis that until now has been absent in the literature.nb_NO
