The Conquering Powers of Love in Chosen Fantasies of George MacDonald and Nathaniel Hawthorne

Abstract

De to utvalgte tekstene for denne oppgaven er "The Day Boy and the Night Girl" av George MacDonald og "Rappaccini's Daughter" av Nathaniel Hawthorne. Gjennom temaene som isolasjon, utdanning, lys og mørke er kjærlighet det sentrale temaet i begge tekstene. Selv om de to tekstene ender på en forskjellig måte, er hovedbudskapet at ekte kjærlighet kan overvinne både negativitet og ondskap, noe som vises direkte, eller ved antydning til hvilket potensial omfanget av gjensidig kjærlighet og respekt kan ha.

The two chosen fantasies for this dissertation "The Day Boy and the Night Girl" by George MacDonald and "Rappaccini's Daughter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne both highlight the conquering powers of crude, natural love over fears grown from scientific experiments. Love being the central idea and theme in both texts, supported by other themes like isolation, education, and the realms of light and darkness. How do these stories conclude that the force of nature that love is, can conquer evil and negativity? Although the stories end differently, then the powers of love are apparent in both fairy tales, either showing or suggesting the potential scope of influence for mutual love and respect.
