A set of mutants with inactivated genes encoding different parts of the butanolide system in Streptomyces coelicolor are cultivated in fermenters. We want to identify and characterize the signaling molecules, gamma- butyrolactones and their role in context to antibiotic production. Extracellular concentrations of the gamma- butyrolactones are determined by LC-MS. Also, intracellular metabolites in a mutant with an inactivated gene responsible for a part of the nitrogen metabolism in S.coelicolor are analysed using GC-MS.nb_NO
