In Norway, textbooks have traditonally played an important role as a teaching resource. Research has shown that 70 – 90 percent of teaching is controlled by the subject textbook in stead of the subject curriculum. There is no national system for approving textbooks, that means the textbooks that get published do not necessarily cover the competence aims set in the national curriculum. The textbook quality is controlled by the publishers and the marked. For det optional subject Geosciences X there is only one textbook. Terra Mater was published in 2007 by Aschehoug publishing company and autored by Ole G. Karlsen. In this study I looked at Terre Mater in ligth of Kunnskapsløftet. The study concludes that Kunnskapsløftet is reflected within the textbook Terra Mater, despite the openness in the formulations of the competence aims. Terra Mater is an arena for devolopment of basic skills, has good illustrations and exercices. I howewer question whether some themes, such as igneous rocks, hydrologi and glaciers, are unnecessarily heavy and deep with too much use of terms relative to what one should expect that students would be able to learn in a 3-hour elective course.nb_NO
