The process from the creation of a design to the initiation of production in the shipbuilding industry is a complex procedure. Recently more and more shipyards has started moving away from traditional shipbuilding methods. Production processes are being automated, and engineering and design digitalized. Kleven is a company that is investing a great amount in modernization and automatization of the shipyard's production facility, and is currently working on moving much of the engineering work onto the digital PLM platform, 3DEXPERIENCE. The development is still a project in progress, yet much is successfully operational today. One of the remaining challenges is to figure out to connect 3DEXPERIENCE with the process of sheet metal cutting on the production floor. Through the development of work methodology for modelling, digital manufacturing and CAM processing of ship design data, where the output is documentation intended for the sheet metal cutting of plates; the initial stage of hull production. By using state of the art digital tools, a best practice is developed, bringing Kleven one small step closer to their goal of reducing manual labour in the production and to gain highly valuable competitive benefits.
