This study investigates vortex shedding downstream the trailing edge of a 100 MW Francis runner. Under given circumstances, a cyclic vortex street establishes downstream a flow obstacle. A review of this particular phenomenon is given and relevant research at vortex shedding and flow induced vibrations is summarized. Necessary background for computational fluid dynamics and turbulence modeling related to vortex shedding is given. Dynamic properties of the runner is investigated and used in the development of a simplified, two dimensional fluid-structure analysis of the runner blade. The commercial software Ansys CFX and Mechanical are used in different ways for performing one and two way FSI-analysis.
Cyclic pressure loads from vortex shedding are estimated in the light of the 2D-analysis, and the resulting stress amplitudes are calculated. Vortex shedding is a well known reason for noise problems and high cycle fatigue in some water power turbines. Two deterministic methods are used for fatigue calculations, namely the local stress approach (Goodman line) and the initial defect/crack growth (Walker-Paris-equation).
To calculate the exact response of a structure exposed to vortex induced forces is known as a great problem. The big unknown in this analysis is the loads generated over the blade, and the transition from a 2D-model to a global blade model. Consequently, this also makes the fatigue analysis uncertain, and this is discussed. It is found that the net oscillating force and the pressure amplitudes at the blade surfaces varies approximately with the square of the free stream velocity.
Added mass effects on eigenfrequencies of the runner blade are discussed and compared from closed form solutions and FSI-analysis. Traditional dimensioning criterions for Francis runners are summarized, and it is discussed from the gained results, how FSIanalysis can be used in a design process of hydro power turbines.
