Abstract
For å gi
elevene tilrettelagt undervisning iverksettes flere intervensjonstiltak.
hjelpemiddelsentraler.
Avhandlingen består av fire selvstendige artikler. Resultatene viser at lærere i stor grad er
villige til å implementere lærermikrofon i undervisningen, mens mikrofoner for medelever
implementeres i mindre grad.
Foreldres engasjement for sine barns skoleutvikling, læreres
Avhandlingen viser at læringsmiljøet
nivå i læringsaktiviteter.
behov for tilrettelagt undervisning.
faglig deltakelse, men synes å ha mindre betydning for sosial deltakelse. Skolenes og lærernes
inkluderende og ekskluderende praksiser får dermed følger for elevenes resultater. ENGLISH SUMMARY:
The majority of Norwegian students with hearing loss are educated in ordinary schools.
Several interventions can be applied to ensure an equal education. Assistive listening devices
are one intervention that can compensate for the students’ hearing loss. Both teachermicrophones
and microphones used by peers are ordinary equipment. Assistive technology is
a key priority for the Norwegian welfare state, in order to ensure that individuals with
disabilities actively participate in the society and this contributes to an inclusive society. The
thesis explores the use of the assistive technology in practice, the students’ and teachers’ view
on the assistive technologies, and the importance of this equipment on the students’
schooling. Assistive listening devices are one of several factors that can be essential for the
students’ schooling. International Classification of Function and Disability - Children and
Youth is used as a research tool for analyzing the interaction between several factors on
activity and participation.
In total, 153 students with hearing loss, 167 teachers and 137 parents participated in the
surveys. In addition, 17 Assistive Technology Centers were interviewed about their practice
of granting assistive listening devices. Only data from the teachers, the students and the
Assistive Technology Centers are included in the thesis.
The thesis consists of four independent articles. The results show that the teachers to a great
extent are willing to implement their own microphone into the teaching, but to a lesser extent
microphones used by classmates. The reason for this is that they are more complex to manage
and handle than the teacher-microphones. An interesting finding is that the students
independent of the degree of hearing loss appeared positive towards the microphones, which
implicate that all the students have benefits of this technology. However the students with
mild hearing loss had more negatively view on hearing aids and cochlea implant compared to
the students with severe hearing loss, and also seldom used hearing aids.
Few students had an ultimate perception of classroom communication, and especially
classmates were difficult to perceive which are related to the insufficient use of microphones
by classmates However, according to the teacher the majority of the students participated
academically and socially equally as to other peers.
There is a complex interaction between several factors that are related to the students'
schooling and possibility to participate academically. Parents’ involvement in their child's
school progress, teachers’ competency, inclusive interventions, bodily functions as the degree
of hearing loss and whether the students had several impairments/difficulties and personal
factor have an importance on the students possibility to understand classroom communication
and participate academically. The results show that the learning environment is less adjusted
here for the students with mild hearing loss compared to the students with severe hearing loss.
Consequently both groups understand the communication and participate academically
equally. The students with several impairments/difficulties often receive special education
and assistants and at the same time the microphones were rarely implemented for them in
common learning activities. The students’ understanding of classroom communication and
their participation socially and academically were low.
Use of assistive listening devices is associated with personal factors as self-confidence and
academically motivation, which have a positive relationship to academically participation.
The assistive listening devices contribute to an accessible and adapted communication. Use of
this technology predicts the students’ perception of communication regardless the degree of
hearing loss. The teachers’ implementation of the microphones indicates an acceptance and
understanding of the students' needs for a supportive and adapted learning environment. A
supportive learning environment is central for the students’ academic participation, but affects
less their social participation. The use of inclusive and exclusive practices by the schools and
by the teachers has an implication on the students’ results.
