Abstract
ENGELSK: Introduction: The study was motivated by a wish to explore how nursing students develop into qualified nurses within current educational- and health systems.
Aim and purpose: To get insight into nursing students’ experiences with development of clinical gaze.
Design and method: Qualitative design, and a phenomenographic approach
Results: The findings in this study shows that the students have a common understanding of what the clinical gaze is. They describe that the clinical gaze is perceived differently in the various practice areas: general medicine and surgery, mental and community health care.
The students describe that the clinical gaze has developed during their education. The natural sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology) are emphasized as the foundation prerequisite for becoming nurses. Subjects such as nursing theory, philosophy of sciences and history is perceived as not relevant. They call for stricter demands on participation in classes and exams, and describe that their own enthusiasm and desire to learn are a prerequisite for the developing of a clinical gaze.
Conclusion: The nursing students experiences are that clinical gaze is about ”a whole” and coherence. This is something more than physical observations, and a result of the student’s motivation and experiences from clinical practice.
